Graphic Novel: Big Ocean (In Progress)
I have been working on an autobiographical graphic novel for the past two years.
Big Ocean is a story of a third-generation Chinese Canadian girl coming to terms with her father’s imminent illness when she returns to Toronto from Paris to take care of him. It is a memoir that weaves together her diary entries, her father’s past, and snippets from the diary her father left to her following his death. A sad memoir full of yearning and generation Y angst, it is also a meditation on the feeling of staying when you want to leave.
The title Big Ocean is a play on my father’s Chinese name, 黃 家 海, containing the Chinese character for ocean (海) in it, and a reference to his escape from China prior to the Cultural Revolution by boat and eventual immigration to Canada.
